One of the most beautiful and best preserved islands on the southern Adriatic is the island of Lastovo.
Lastovo is situated in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, 14 km from the island of Korcula. Lastovo is 9,8 km long and 5,8 km wide. Surface of the island is 41 km. There are 46 bays and the same number of medieval churches on the island.
Lastovo is the biggest island in the Lastovo archipelago which leads to the little islands Lastovnjaci and Vrhovnjaci on the northeast.
Town of Lastovo has a long and interesting history. It is an old medieval town which was built in a form of amphitheater. The town is surrounded with hills.
The sea around the island is one of the richest areas of fish in the Adriatic thanks to the zooplanktons.
The local people are saying that the Mediterranean monk seal lived on the Lastovo, near the cave Medvjedine until recently.
The underwater plant life is rich with 248 species of sea plants. Lastovo is promoted with the preserved environment and authentic Mediterranean architecture. There are no apartment complexes or large construction buildings like on the other Croatian islands.
The island has no industries, no big cities and the number of inhabitants is 800. With Mljet, Lastovo is one of the most wooded Croatian islands with over the 70% of the forested area.
Lastovo is declared as a Nature Park in 2007. That is a confirmation of a beauty and harmony of undistorted environment and guarantee that in the future won't be aggressive buildings that devastate the environment. The Nature Park is abundant of coastal cliffs, plant and animal species. Forest on the island hides many caves and crown jewels are hidden in the sea.
Lastovo is one of the 10 gardens of Eden of the Mediterranean which is listed on the World Wild Foundation. Lastovo is an ideal place for vacation for those who love the untouched nature, crystal clear sea, lonely coves and delightful underwater world.

Lastovo archipelago is characterized by a mild Mediterranean climate with mild winters and sunny summers. Lastovo is one of the sunniest islands on the Adriatic with 2700 sunny hour per year. The average temperature in January is 10.1 C and in July is 24.4 C.
