How To Find And Keep The Best Shells On Sanibel

Kamis, 13 Desember 2012

Bringing home a little bit of Sanibel with you will provide memories to last a life time!

Sanibel Island

My hesitation to concentrate on the shelling in writing about Sanibel is that everyone knows that fact. Sanibel is considered one of the three best places in the entire world to go shelling. Although it is in third place, the first two, the Pacific Islands and Africa are a little remote for the majority of visitors who come to Sanibel. So Sanibel attracts shell collectors from all over the country and as well as outside of the country.

Sanibel Island Beach Shells

While there are many, many things that distinguish Sanibel Island as a resort vacation destination, it is undeniable that the quality of shelling sets it apart. It is also worth mentioning that many of Sanibel's shells are simply works of art. A fruitful day on the beach is not just entertaining, it is a treasure hunt that can result in a wonderful find. But first the treasure hunter needs to be prepared to make the most of the shelling experience and protect the shells found and gathered.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that live shells are not allowed in your shell collection. Because seashells are important to the islands' chain of life, and because Sanibel and Captiva are refuge islands where all life is considered precious, the State of Florida has outlawed the collecting of live shells on the island. "Live shell" is defined as any specimen containing an inhabitant, whether or not the mollusk seems alive. The law also protects sand dollars, starfish and sea urchins. All shelling is prohibited in J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

Sanibel Shells

Aside from avoiding collecting live shells, it is best for the Island ecology not to try to remove buckets of shells from the beaches. It is also best for you. Not only are the shells an example of your cup runneth over when you arrive home with lots of shells and no where to keep them, shell collections are best viewed as "less is more". In the words of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of famed aviator, Charles Lindbergh, the shells of Sanibel and Captiva should be viewed as individual pieces: "One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can collect only a few, and they are more beautiful if they are few."

There are few places in the world where you can bring home such beauty from a vacation, and all for free! So with a cautionary and conservation philosophy in mind, here are the essentials of shell collecting: Be Prepared. Bring a bucket, a net bag and a scoop, and plenty of sun lotion as well as a hat if it is a hot, sunny day (as most days are on Sanibel!).

Shell at low tide preferably and after a storm to find the maximum number of shells and maximum variety. Soak shells in a 50/50 solution of water and bleach, few hours or overnight. If any barnacles or other matter is left remove with a pick or toothbrush. To make shells shine wipe with mineral oil or baby oil.

Sand Dollar

You may collect sand dollars but first check to make sure that the sand dollar is not alive - turn it over - there are little centipede feet up and down the backside - gently touch them with your finger to see if they move and its alive. If alive gently place back into the water and if they do not move, then you have just found one of the islands treasures!

To bleach a sand dollar white it is important to soak in fresh water first. Water will be a brownish color, change water frequently until fairly clear or just continually flush with water until water stays fairly clear. Soak in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water for 5-10 minutes. Do not soak too long in bleach solution as sand dollar may crumble. Rinse throughly, let dry preferably in sun to bleach further. To harden sand dollar for crafts or display: Mix equal portions of white glue and water. With paint brush cover sand dollar with mixture. Let dry.

As mentioned in a much earlier blog post, Sanibel Island is renowned for its great shelling. The phrase "Sanibel Stoop" refers to the many people you will see all year long bent over collecting shells from the beach.

How to Choose The Best Island To Visit in Hawaii

Rabu, 12 Desember 2012

The #1 question that people ask on the Yahoo/Travel/US/Honolulu forum is, which is the best island to visit? The answer to which is dependent upon the "asker". What activities interest you? All the islands offer you the island basics...beautiful beaches, surfing, snorkeling, fresh fish and fruits, and lots of scenic sights.

Beyond that, each island serves up things unique: Kauai...1300' NaPali sea-cliffs, Waimea Canyon (Grand Canyon of the Pacific), the only navigable rivers in the state (5) and, as you can imagine, some great kayaking opportunities, some great zip-lining, and limited commercialization.

Waimea Canyon

Oahu...home to Honolulu, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and 75% plus of the state's population. So, you will find tons of hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs to keep you entertained and the best chance at finding a "deal". However, the price is that it can get pretty crowded at times and may not resemble the ideal tropical getaway you may be imagining.

Maui...falls somewhere in between Kauai and Oahu, and the second most visited island in the chain. High points of Maui include; snorkeling at Molokini island, a very scenic drive on the road to Hana, Haleakala National Park (10,000+ elevation) where everyone talks about catching sunrises! Go during the winter season and you'll have easy access to whale watching cruises, although they are available on all the islands, Maui probably has the easiest access. While zip-lining can also be found on Oahu (1), and the Big Island (2), Maui is the only island that can rival Kauai with its zip-lining opportunities.

Interested in witnessing the power of a volcano? The Big Island of Hawaii is your only choice. Also home to Kailua-Kona, Hilo (wettest city in the US), and 13,000'+ Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The Big Island offers all but two of the world's climate zones, landscapes that go from rainforest to dessert to alpine, all in a day's drive. The majority of resort development is confined to the Kailua-Kona side of the island and the rest of the island remains relatively untamed.

Kailua-Kona

There are also the islands of Molokai and Lanai you could visit. Molokai is a very laid-back community and has the reputation for excluding many visitors. They are not necessarily rude, just not overly warm. Even those who live in Hawaii rarely visit Molokai and those that do, mainly go for the hunting and fishing. Molokai is most infamous for being the location of the Leper Colony and Father Damien, located on the north shores of the island. Also found on the north shore are the world's highest sea-cliffs, standing over 3,000' above the ocean.

Molokini island

Lanai was known as the "Pineapple Isle" because it was almost entirely owned by the Dole Pineapple Company. About the only visits locals would make to Lanai was if they were one of the hundreds of high school students hired to pick pineapples during the summer break. Today, Lanai is reinventing itself as a resort destination with two resorts operating there. Not a lot to do, but if you're looking for "an escape", its a possibility worth looking into.

So, as you can see, there really is no one "best island". Everyone who visits leaves with their own personal favorite. To help you best pick your best destination, I have put a website together that points out things to do, places to go, and special events that might help.

Hawaiian Islands Vacation Which Island Suits You Best

The sunny beaches you will be able to enjoy during your Hawaiian Islands vacation, provide a great setting for a holiday. Some of the best beaches in the world are located on the Hawaiian Islands. But that is not all. Hawaii also has rich marine life, tropical forests, delicious food, a rocking nightlife and more. A Hawaiian Islands vacation is a fun-filled one that appeals to travelers of various ages and lifestyles.

Each of the six Hawaiian Islands of Kauai, Maui, Oahu, Big Island, Molokai and Lanai, have a distinct appeal for different sets of travelers. Before shopping for Hawaii Islands vacation packages, pinpoint the island that best suits your travel itinerary.

Six of the Hawaiian Islands

Kauai: Tourists looking to get away from the bustle of daily life should head to the nature-rich island of Kauai. The island's stunning natural beauty has brought even filmmakers to its shores. Movies like South Pacific and Jurassic Park were shot on Kauai Island. Often called the "Garden Isle," Kauai has lush green rainforests, pristine rivers and waterfalls. This natural beauty coupled with 50 miles of untouched beaches makes Kauai a popular honeymoon destination. But even adventure lovers enjoy a Hawaiian Islands vacation to this beautiful island. Hiking, ziplining and kayaking are just some of the activities available to adrenalin junkies. While here, do visit the Napali Coast and the breathtaking Waimea Canyon.

Kauai

Maui: The island of Maui has a lot to offer. If you find Hawaii Island vacation packages providing Maui vacations at reasonable rates, do not pass them up! This scenic island has something for everyone. The sands of Kaanapali draw beach lovers from around the world. Marine life enthusiasts head to the town of Lahaina to spot whales basking on its shores. Plan a Hawaiian Island vacation during the winter months if whale watching is on your travel itinerary. The so-called "Magic Isle" is also home to championship golf courses. So you can tee off while the rest of your family follows a hiking trail in the Haleakala National Park.

Maui waterfall

Oahu: Here to experience the famous Hawaii nightlife? Then plan your Hawaiian Island vacation on the busy isle of Oahu. Start shopping in advance for Hawaii Island vacation rentals in Oahu. This island is a popular tourist destination all year round. And it does not get more touristy than the ever-popular Waikiki Beach. Oahu, which is often aptly called "The Gathering Place," has other attractions as well. For a taste of history, visit the Pearl Harbor memorials or Iolani Palace, the only royal residence in the United States. Oahu is a shopper's paradise as well. But if you want to get away from it all during your Hawaiian Island vacation, simply hike up to Leahi, the famous Diamond Head crater.

Oahu

Big Island: Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world is one of the biggest selling points of a Big Island. Hawaii vacation rental deals to Big Island are a hit among adventure lovers. And even though Big Island is sometimes referred to as "Volcano Isle," the island also offers scenic hiking trails, ancient Hawaiian temples, the birthplace of King Kamehameha, rich marine life and some of the best beaches (including white, black and green sand beaches) in Hawaii. Big Island vacation packages can range from high-end deals providing accommodation in luxury resorts to cheaper vacation homes.

Big Island

Molokai: If you are looking to get away from it all, plan a Hawaiian Island vacation at Molokai. This quiet little island has no traffic and no big buildings. The region is ideal for a tranquil vacation. You can experience Hawaiian culture, get hula dancing tips from the locals, try your hand at sport fishing and much more. Do visit the white sand shores of Papohaku Beach while you are here. And try taking a mule ride as well.

Molokai

Lanai: Traveling in Hawaii is never cheap. But tourists looking for some heavy-duty pampering on their Hawaiian Islands vacation should head to the exclusive five-star resorts on Lanai island. However, there is more to Lanai than luxury accommodations and golf courses. The island is also popular among tourists who like taking its unpaved roads, visiting Puu Pehe (Sweetheart Rock) and the famous rock garden Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods).

Lanai

Traveling to all the islands during a single trip may be difficult, but not impossible. A multiple Hawaiian Island vacation is a great option for travelers with some time on their hands. Even if you do not visit all six islands, you can manage two or three over a 10-day visit. Only, make sure you plan your Hawaiian Islands Vacation in advance and avoid taking part in too much activities over a short period.

Harbour Island Snorkeling (Bahamas)

Selasa, 11 Desember 2012

Harbour Island (part of the Eleuthera Island group) is one of the finest vacation getaways in all of The Bahamas. Harbour Island snorkeling opportunities are exceptional and varied, and the island itself is the hub of coral reef snorkeling (and scuba diving) for the entire North Eleuthera area.

Harbour island Snorkeling Environment

An extensive and well-developed fringing reef system runs the entire length of the east-facing coast of Eleuthera, but most of this reef system is not readily accessed. Harbor Island is an exception to this generality, with many fine snorkeling sites for coral reef exploration but a short swim or boat trip from shore.

Harbour Island Diving

There are basically two choices when it comes to Harbour Island snorkeling on coral reefs of the area. One can snorkel either the exposed (windward) eastern coast where the main fringing reef and large hotels are situated, or (alternatively) the protected (leeward) coast which is far less developed in terms of tourism infrastructure, but has sparser and smaller coral formations.

Under calm conditions, your best Harbour Island snorkeling option is to visit reef sites off the eastern shore. The reef formations here are far more extensive, varied, and complex than on the lee side of the island, and when accessible can rival the very best of Bahamas snorkeling opportunities.

Many of the reefs along the eastern shore are shallow enough for great snorkeling, even for beginners. These reefs can be accessed either right from the beach or via a snorkel boat tour. The main reef comes closer to shore at the far ends of the world famous pink sand beach here, so if you plan to snorkel from the beach that's where to go.

When the wind is up, you will be better off heading over to the protected lee side of the island and snorkeling some of the many small coral heads and patch reefs that can be easily reached right from the beach.

Harbour Island Travel Tips

The islands of Eleuthera are located about 220 miles from Miami and about 60 miles east of Nassau, perched on the eastern edge of the Great Bahama Bank with nothing but thousands of miles of tropical Atlantic Ocean between the eastern shores of these islands and the coast o f Africa.

Harbour Island

Regularly scheduled service from the U.S. to the North Eleuthera airport (ELH) is available from Atlanta, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale. Daily 30-minute flights are also available from Nassau on BahamasAir. Harbour Island (sometimes misspelled as "Harbor Island") is readily accessed from the North Eleuthera airport by numerous fast motorboats that operate throughout the day.

Dunmore Town
The central hub of Harbour Island is Dunmore Town. With its Cape Cod like charm, this out island favorite has become (for better or worse, depending upon your point of view) a chic "in" getaway for the rich and famous, who lodge at posh resorts or extravagant beachfront homes.

Not surprisingly, the wealthier clientele have driven the average cost of staying on this lovely island somewhat higher than most of the Bahamas out islands commonly visited by tourists. Still, reasonably priced lodging and dive operations are readily available.

Gran Canaria - The Best Island To Go On Vacation In Europe

Gran Canaria Island in the sun

Gran Canaria is one of the most popular destinations for Scandinavians and Englishmen during the cold winter months. A great place to recharge your batteries and enjoy a week or two in the sun.

Before I visited this island the first time, I had an idea of a place with beaches and bars and lots of drunk Scandinavians. The first time I went there on vacation was the winter of 2003. And since then I've been there with my family at least once a year.

Gran Canaria

Perfect climate for asthmatics

The island has a pleasant climate all year round, from December to February temperatures are usually around 20 degrees Celsius.

Asthmatics who come here often discover they have fewer asthma symptoms and that they can cut down on medication when they stay on the island. There are also very good medical expertise in this area on Gran Canaria.

The island has a stunning natural environment that many people miss when they're only a week or two on vacation. I was also one of them. The first trips we did not see much more than sun and beaches.

For people seeking a vibrant nightlife during your stay, the island has a lot to offer. The southern part of the island has hundreds of bars and clubs that will satisfy your need for partying and fun.

Gran Canaria for cyclists and golfers

Many cyclists come to the island in winter. The climate is perfect with low humidity and there are many routes to choose from. The highest point on the island is almost 2000 meters above sea level. So for those who like to climb the small mountain roads there are plenty of challenges. But there are also many other options. Spanish motorists are often very considerate towards cyclists on the roads.

If you play golf, this is a paradise. The island is proud of its world class golf courses. You will have many opportunities to choose from.

Whatever kind of holiday you want, then Gran Canaria has something to offer. Check out the best hotel deal now to see if you can make a bargain.

Sabtu, 08 Desember 2012

If you've been thinking about a holiday in Greece then keep on reading. Have you thought of exploring the Greek isles? Do you know a sailor or do you have any experience in sailing? The best way to see the Greek islands is to sail them in your own sailing boat. There are a lot of sailing vacation companies offering sailing boats for charter. Even if you do not know how to sail, you can hire a crew or a captain. Or you can join a flotilla. Many flotilla itineraries include special events like shore parties and fun regattas, and give you the chance to mingle with other sailors.

Greek Archipelago

The Dodecanese (Twelve Islands or Dodekanes) is the most southerly group of islands in the Greek archipelago. Visit Rhodes and Kos, islands full of history and nice beaches, Symi and Patmos is islands uncorrupted from the civilization. Since Turkey is only 5 nautical miles away from Kos, this country is certainly within reach for a sailing vacation in this area.

Did you know that "Dodecanese" means "twelve islands" in Greek and that is why these groups of islands sometime is called "Twelve Islands".

The 14 Dodecanese islands have a lot to offer. You will find a wonderful blend of architectural styles of eastern and western civilizations. Almost every island has its classical remains, its Crusaders' castle, and its traditional villages.

The Meltemi wind has its peak in July and August. It starts sporadic in June, blows more strongly in July through to September and again sporadic in October These northerly winds do affect any travel plan and consider a one-way charter from Kos to Rhodes during July to September.

Usually sailing charter companies in Dodecanese have their bases in either Rhodes or Kos.

Kos Island

Kos is overlooked by a Crusader castle and known as the place of birth of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. The beautiful harbor at Kos city is a great place to put a yacht. The harbor is filled with sights and sounds both day and night as visitors party on boats just off the coast, and in bars, restaurants and clubs located on the harbor itself. Of course, there are locals here too, and small fishing boats make up the majority of the sea traffic. The island of Kos is populated by nearly 180,000 people, many of them still living the traditional lives of Greek fishermen.

Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese. It is known for the Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the old world, which was sadly destroyed. Rhodes has everything from beautiful beaches to a lush, green interior, a capital full of intense and noisy activity and one of the top sunshine records in Greece. The rock-rose is so productive here that it has been named the 'Island of Roses' and whiles the northern coast is renowned for its lively tourist resorts the south offers nice beaches and a slower, more simple pace of life.

Explore Venice's Fascinating Islands

Most people are attracted to Venice to explore the famous cultural sights like Galleria dell'Accademia and St Mark's Basilica, and to take a gondola ride along its winding canals. But when you stay here you might also like to go a bit further and explore some of the interesting islands in the lagoon.

Venice Island

Here are a few of the best islands to visit during your stay if you are feeling more adventurous and want to see more than just the city.

Torcello

Torcello Island is one of the most popular of all the islands in Venice Lagoon, so once you have sorted out your Venice airport boat transfer to your hotel, this could be a good one to start with. The main attraction on this island is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Dell'Assunta which dates back to 639 AD. Inside the cathedral you will find some stunning mosaics from the Byzantine period, dating back to the 11th and 13th centuries, and these in themselves are worth the trip. The cathedral is only a 10-minute walk after you arrive on the island by boat, and after you have seen it you may want to walk around some of the paths or see some of the other attractions including the Church of Santa Fosca and Torcello Museum.

Torcello

Murano

Once you have caught your Venice airport boat transfer and you are ready for some sightseeing, you might want to head over to Murano. Murano is another of the most popular islands due to the main tourist activity here - watching glass blowing in action.

Murano Italy

Glass making has been carried out on the island for centuries, and is an age-old tradition here. In fact all glass makers in the city had to live on the island at one point in order to protect the secrets of their trade. You can watch a demonstration in action, and there are a number of glass factories which you are able to tour. As well as watching glass being made you can also visit a number of pleasant restaurants and enjoy some walks around this peaceful island.

Lido Island Italy

Lido

Lido is one of the most famous of the islands, being the setting for the Venice Film Festival which is held here every year in August or September. You will travel past it on the Venice airport boat taxi to your hotel.

The festival is one of the most in the world, and each year movie stars from around the globe and top directors visit for the screenings and the chance to win the main prize - the Leone d'Oro.

Known as 'The Golden Island' due to its long stretches of sandy beaches, Lido is also the place where the Grand Hotel des Bains is located - the setting for the novel 'Death in Venice' by Thomas Mann.

You should not just limit yourself to the city when it comes to sightseeing. After you have arranged your Venice airport boat taxi and found your accommodation, try to take another water trip out to at least one of the above islands to see more of this beautiful area.

Explore Paratys Tropical Islands

Paraty is in one of the most beautiful areas of Brazil and famed for its lovely coastline dotted with sixty-five islands. There are also special areas for scuba divers who want to explore Paratys islands from a different depth.

Paratys Tropical Islands

The closest, and therefore most visited, islands are close to Paratys shores and located in the bay. These are some of the most beautiful islands with fine white-sand beaches situated close to reefs for viewing a variety of sea life during snorkeling, but you will usually have to share the views with quite a few other people. For those seeking a more solitary excursion, there are also tours to some of the farther islands that are perfect for a romantic day with a loved one or a secluded family picnic.

Paraty

There are a few different ways to get to these beautiful islands, but by far the nicest way is by sail boat. Chartering a sail boat is more expensive than some of the other tour options, but the peace and tranquility you experience while sunning on your deck as you slice through calm turquoise water to pristine islands is unparalleled. If chartering a private sail boat is out of your budget, there are larger boats that take many travelers at once to some of the islands and are very inexpensive. Or, travelers can rent a private boat with an outboard motor for a more intimate experience. These little fishing boats are usually operated by locals who can whisk you to many of the more secluded beaches. Fishing boats are the best option for small groups wanting to see many of the islands as they are faster than the other boats which means more time for snorkeling and sunning.
